World of Warcraft: What should I be? Rogue or Mage?
I can’t decide if I should be a rogue or a mage. This is my first character. What do you suggest I create? A rogue, or a mage, or maybe a warlock? Or maybe a paladin..Ahh I can’t decide! Which one is more fun?First Step
Rogue is probably the easier of the two to comprehend.
Mage is more fun imo and easier to level.
Mage get free food and drink and can sheep stuff….. Rogue have a bit more survivability and can hide with sneak attacks.

- As a personal opinion i think
Undead - Rouge
Rouge can sneak behind monster’s and people to steal items and gold
and the undead part give’s you the ability to canabilize your defeated enemy for health. - It really depends on your style of game play.
Rogues are great for controlling your enemy and generally being a pain in PVP. You’ll stun luck and generally make your enemies miserable and will be able to sneak around, skipping mobs you don’t want to kill and appearing out of nowhere to get the jump on your enemies
Mages dish out amazing damage in both PVP and PVE but are incredibly fragile. But specced correctly, and they too can be a master of control by being able to kite around their enemies and stay out of melee range of many of their enemies. Warlocks and Mages are also the two best classes with the best Area of Effect damage spells in the game. They also have the ability to conjure food and water which cuts down on your costs, but at the same vein, they consume mana at an incredible rate and get hit incredibly hard. I personally find the down time between fights to recover for mages is very high compared to say a rogue or a shadow priest.
Warlocks are great classes for PVP and PVE as their fear abilities and their summoned demon pets can keep multiple enemies while they spam damage over time spells to take down multiple enemies at once. They tend to be tougher than mages and their pet usually allows them to stay out of trouble in PVE. I find out of the fourth classes you suggested, warlocks are the easiest to level. Only problem is they are currently in the process of being nerfed to hell due to previously being way over powered.
Paladins are incredible classes as they make the best tanks in 5 and 10 man instances. Change in talent spec and gear can make them great single target healers. Another change in talent spec and gear, and they become a hardy pvp damage class. There is currently great debate about how useful retribution paladins are in a pve situation as a damage dealer, but Blizzard is working to improve them as PVE DPS in Wrath of the Lich King.
Now, which class is more fun? It depends on your play style to be honest, and I can only tell you what I find to be the most fun out of all the classes. If you aren’t in a rush to level, I would highly suggest just playing all the classes to level 10-20 and finding out for yourself which class you enjoy the most. In general, if you want to hit your enemy with a weapon, choose a paladin or a rogue, if you want to cast spells and damage your enemy from afar, choose a mage or a warlock. If you want to be able to be a key member of your instance group that will constantly be in high demand, choose the paladin. If you want to be a pain in the butt and destroy the enemy in PVP, try a warlock or a rogue.
- I was in a very similar situation to you just a few weeks ago. I made a Gnome Mage and a Night Elf Rogue, and played both to 15 before deciding on the Mage specced for Frost. Of course, I still have the Rogue for leveling later, and occasionally pulling out to burn through the Rested XP so she can collect more.
- Well, the above answers are all good, but let me propose a different solution. Why not be a rogue and a mage, and a warrior? Why not be a druid?
I’m prejudiced since my first toon was a druid, and at lvl 70 is still so much fun to play!
In cat form you can stealth and attack from behind like a rogue. In bear form your armor is similar to a warrior or paladin. In aquatic form you can use transit schemes that would take too long for ordinary toon. In travel form (instant cast) you can run away and live to fight anothe rday with a 40% speed boost. And at lvl 68 - you gain flight form for virtually nothing - two levels before other players can fly. And unlike flying mounts, which take a few seconds to deploy, it’s instant cast. Runing away from danger and fall off a cliff? No problem. Hit the button and your airborne.
But my favorite is the Moonkin. With a 400% increase in armor, it’s a powerful caster in plate armor, able to take a lot of punishment while dropping 2500 hp starfires on the mobs. It even has a pet of sorts, the treants who are at least as goofy to look at as the Moonkin himself, but a caster trying to get off a spell has a hard time with three trees beating on him, and the trees take the aggro as well.
A properly spec’ed feral druid is a more than servicable tank. Resto Druids are much in demand for their Heal over time capabilities, some of which stack. And the Moonkin (sometimes called a Panzerkin) brings powerful spell crit buff with him, and you don’t have to protect him like a squishy mage.
Druids use rage, energy, and mana like warriors, rogues and mages, so you get to learn the proper management oof these assets.
And there is something inpiring about a team of four or five druids running down the road in cat form. It just looks very cool!
If you decide on the druid, plan to level in balance spec. Your guild will help you decide which spec will ultimately benefit you and them the most..
Happy Questing!
